Vietnam & Cambodia Travel FAQs
A rewarding journey through Vietnam and Cambodia starts with choosing what matters to you and allowing time to experience it. These questions focus on the land journey: where to go, how to travel, and how to avoid an itinerary that feels rushed.

Does Holiday Road Travel plan guided trips to Vietnam?
Yes. Guided Vietnam journeys are a core part of my work. We begin with the places and experiences that interest you, your available time, and the level of structure you prefer. A Mekong cruise can be part of the conversation, but you do not need to take a cruise to plan a Vietnam trip with me.
Has Dave traveled in Vietnam and Cambodia?
Yes. I traveled with a small group from Ho Chi Minh City through the Mekong Delta and Cambodia, continuing to Siem Reap and Bangkok. That journey gave me firsthand perspective on pacing and the balance between organized touring and personal exploration. I share observations from the trip in Cambodia and Beyond.
Should I visit Vietnam alone or combine it with Cambodia?
Choose based on your interests and the time you can give each place. A Vietnam-focused trip lets you spend your available days exploring that country. Adding Cambodia can make sense when places such as Angkor and Phnom Penh are important to you. Before adding another country, look at what you would need to shorten or remove from the original itinerary.
How many days should I allow for Vietnam and Cambodia?
Build the length around a realistic route. Count arrival and departure days, transfers, and time to settle in before deciding how much sightseeing fits. With limited time, choose a focused journey rather than trying to cover every region and both countries. The most useful question is not how many stops can fit, but how much time you want to spend experiencing each one.
What is the best time of year to visit Vietnam?
The best timing depends on the regions you plan to visit. Northern, central, and southern Vietnam have different weather patterns, so one month can bring different conditions along the same itinerary. Match your dates to the actual route and the experiences that matter most to you. Vietnam’s official tourism website provides a helpful regional weather guide.
Should I take a guided journey or travel independently?
Think about how much organization you want to handle yourself and how much interpretation you value along the way. My work focuses on guided journeys for travelers who appreciate structure and coordinated plans. On my own small-group trip through the region, I paid particular attention to where guidance added context and where time for personal exploration made the experience richer.
Is a Mekong cruise a substitute for seeing the rest of Vietnam?
A Mekong cruise is one part of a possible Vietnam journey. It does not automatically include places such as Hanoi, central Vietnam, or Ha Long Bay. Check whether the program you are considering is cruise-only or includes additional land travel. The Mekong River Cruise FAQs explain how to compare those options.
What stood out to you about visiting Cambodia?
The need to give the experience time and attention. My journey included Phnom Penh’s recent-history sites and the temples around Siem Reap. Those visits asked for different kinds of energy and engagement. I would avoid treating Cambodia as a quick collection of stops between other destinations. My trip report explains what shaped that perspective.
What should I consider when comparing guided itineraries?
Read the daily schedule as carefully as the destination list. Consider the number of hotel changes, travel days, early starts, included visits, and opportunities to pause. Ask what is optional and how much of each day is organized. Two journeys can list similar places while giving you very different amounts of time to enjoy them.
Where should I check passport and visa requirements?
Use current government guidance for your nationality and exact itinerary. Vietnam and Cambodia have separate entry processes, and a route that returns to a country may need different arrangements from a single visit. Start with the official Vietnam immigration portal and Cambodia eVisa website. For a river cruise, also confirm the border-crossing details with the operator before applying.
