Mekong River Cruise FAQs: Vietnam & Cambodia
A Mekong journey is more than its sailing dates. The land stays, transfers, and route through Vietnam and Cambodia all shape the experience. I help travelers look at those pieces together before choosing a cruise.

Where does a Mekong cruise in Vietnam and Cambodia travel?
These journeys explore the lower Mekong region in Vietnam and Cambodia. Depending on the itinerary, visits may include river communities, Phnom Penh, and other stops along the route. Distinguish the cities used in the trip’s name from the actual embarkation and disembarkation ports: part of the journey may take place by road. Confirm the route for your particular sailing.
Does a Mekong cruise include Angkor Wat?
Check the package carefully. Angkor is visited from Siem Reap as a land experience; it is not a temple complex you visit directly from the cruise ship. A cruise-and-land program may include it, while a cruise-only booking may require a separate stay and touring arrangements. Compare the full day-by-day program rather than relying on the trip title.
How long is the cruise, and how much time does the whole trip need?
Some Mekong programs offer a seven-night sailing, but the complete journey can be considerably longer once you add flights and land stays. Count nights on the ship, nights in hotels, and travel days separately. Decide which places beyond the river matter to you before choosing how much time to allow.
Should I choose a cruise-only package or a cruise-and-land journey?
Compare what each option actually covers. A cruise-and-land program can bring the hotel stays, touring, and connections into one organized itinerary. Cruise-only can also work, but the arrangements on either side of the sailing still need attention. Review the full route, inclusions, and handoffs between each part of the trip before deciding.
Should I travel from Vietnam to Cambodia or in the other direction?
Start with the available itinerary, then compare flight connections, land stays, and where you want the trip to begin and end. Neither direction is automatically best for every traveler. Direction also affects the order of your border crossings, so it matters when checking entry arrangements. Compare the complete journey rather than only the direction of the sailing.
What should I know about the physical demands of a Mekong cruise?
A comfortable ship does not mean every shore visit is easy. Excursions may involve steps, uneven ground, and boarding arrangements that require care; heat can also affect how a day feels. Share mobility needs early and confirm the operator’s requirements for the exact ship, transfers, and land program. Accessibility should be established before booking rather than assumed from photographs.
Do I need the same entry documents for a river crossing as for an airport arrival?
Do not assume the process is identical. The entry point, direction of travel, nationality, and any return visit can affect the arrangements. Follow current government guidance and your operator’s instructions for the specific itinerary. AmaWaterways, for example, publishes separate preparation guidance for its Asia journeys. The operator of your own cruise should confirm its requirements.
What should I compare beyond the cruise fare?
Look at the hotel nights, transfers, excursions, and flights needed to complete your journey. Establish which arrangements belong to the cruise booking and which are separate. The practical question is who handles each connection and what you need to arrange yourself. For a broader cost comparison checklist, see the River Cruise FAQs.
Can I combine a Mekong cruise with more time in Vietnam or Cambodia?
Yes. Pre- and post-cruise extensions are part of the travel planning services I offer. We can discuss which places add something meaningful to your trip and whether there is enough time to enjoy them. For the broader land-travel decision, see the Vietnam & Cambodia Travel FAQs.
